Airlines price by seat, not by ticket
Each flight has many fare buckets at different prices. As cheaper buckets sell out, the next available price moves up. That is why the same seat can cost different amounts on different days — and why a fare you saw yesterday may be gone today.
Demand and timing drive the swings
Prices respond to how full a flight is, how soon it departs, the day of week, the season and what competitors are charging. Peak travel periods and last-minute bookings tend to be the most expensive.
